Metal Buildings on the Western Slope
Mountain State Construction erects steel buildings across western Colorado, from the Grand Valley and the North Fork country to the San Juans. From orchard ground to oil and gas, we engineer for the soils and the swing in elevation that define this side of the divide.
Western Slope conditions.
Much of the Western Slope sits on expansive clay and shale that move with moisture, so the foundation is where a Western Slope building is won or lost. Snow is moderate in the valleys and heavier as you climb toward the San Juans, and elevation swings widely across the region. We engineer each building to its site, starting with the soils.
Soils
Expansive clays and Mancos shale run through much of the Grand Valley and beyond, with collapsible soils in places. A geotechnical report drives the foundation, and we design for what the ground actually does.
Snow Load
Moderate across the lower valleys and heavier as you gain elevation toward Durango and the San Juans. We size framing to the value your jurisdiction adopts for your site.
Wind
Generally moderate across the valleys, with canyon and downvalley winds locally. Exposure is set per site rather than assumed.
Frost & Foundation
Frost depth varies with elevation across the region, so footings are set below the local frost line, tied to the soils design for the site.
Seismic
Colorado is low to moderate seismic, and on most Western Slope sites seismic is not the controlling load. We confirm it against the governing code.
Code & Jurisdiction
Mesa, Garfield, Delta, Montrose, La Plata, and Montezuma counties each adopt their own edition and amendments. We deliver stamped drawings built to your authority.

Do you build in Grand Junction and the Grand Valley?
Yes. The Grand Valley is core Western Slope coverage, from Fruita and Palisade through Grand Junction and out to the surrounding towns.
My site has expansive soil. Can you handle it?
Yes. Expansive clay and shale are common here, so we start from a geotechnical report and design a foundation built for how that ground moves.
Do you serve the San Juans and Durango?
Yes, with snow loads sized to those higher-elevation sites rather than the valley figures.
Will you provide drawings for my county's permit?
Yes. We deliver engineered, stamped drawings built to the authority that governs your site.
